Conventional braces are an effective and time-tested
orthodontic treatment. When most people think of braces, they picture a child or teenager wearing the appliance. However, braces are also extremely beneficial for adults with crooked teeth or a misaligned bite (malocclusion). Here at Senestraro Family Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on treating every member of the family, from young children to mom and dad!
Why Adult Orthodontics?
Over the last decade or so, adult orthodontics has exploded in popularity. More and more people now realize it is never too late to have a straighter, more beautiful smile. We believe everyone should be able to attain the smile of their dreams!
If you are an adult and interested in orthodontic treatment, our office can help. Braces can not only improve the aesthetics of your smile, but also your overall oral health. Crooked and crowded teeth are harder to brush and floss, making these areas more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease.
Moving these teeth to their proper position can drastically reduce your risk of developing dental diseases. A properly aligned bite can also correct bruxism (teeth grinding) and TMJ disorders (problems with your jaw). Correcting a malocclusion is one of the best ways to prevent fractures, premature enamel wear, and other structural damage.
Conventional Braces vs. Clear Aligner Trays vs. Lingual Braces
Both adults and children have more orthodontic treatment options than ever before. Many adults are concerned about the stigma associated with wearing conventional braces. For these patients, we may recommend a more discreet alternative, such as
clear aligner trays and lingual braces.
During your initial consultation, we will be able to determine which orthodontic appliance is most suitable for your specific issues. Correcting complex problems may require the use of conventional braces. Before you decide which option is best for you, it is important to know how each appliance works.
Conventional braces consist of three major components: brackets, wires, and elastic bands. The brackets are bonded to the front of each tooth and connected by a thin wire, which is held in place by the elastic bands. Throughout your treatment, we tighten the wire, placing pressure on the teeth, which slowly moves them to their proper position.
Clear aligner trays also put pressure on the teeth, each tray moving the teeth to a straighter position than the one before. The trays are made from a special plastic that is virtually invisible, making this type of treatment more discreet. The success of your treatment is dictated by how often you wear your trays.
Lingual braces are similar to conventional braces, with the same components. However, lingual braces are placed on the back of the teeth, effectively hiding the appliance. Because the appliance is non removable and discreet, lingual braces can be an excellent alternative to both conventional braces and clear aligner trays.
Benefits of Braces for Adults
Braces are oftentimes the fastest, most effective way to move teeth to their proper position. Having a straighter, more beautiful smile can improve your oral health and even your mental health. People that are proud of their smiles tend to have higher self-esteem.
Thanks to technological advancements, braces are also less noticeable than ever before. If you have a complex orthodontic issue that disqualifies the use of more discreet alternatives, braces may be the ideal solution!
