Oral Hygiene with Invisalign
Portland, OR

A woman smiling with her Invisalign at Senestraro Family Orthodontics in Portland, ORFor some people the sight of misaligned or overcrowded teeth in their smile does not bother them, however, there are many more people who are concerned with the look of a crooked smile. Patients are usually wary of getting traditional braces simply because of the stigma associated with them as well as the difficult brushing and flossing while wearing them. Food can get stuck to them easily too, making for an unsightly smile.

Another option to traditional braces is Invisalign which uses clear alignment trays that are virtually unnoticeable. If you are concerned about your misaligned teeth and want to do something about them, Invisalign is the solution. Come see us today at Senestraro Family Orthodontics to find out more about this great treatment option.

Why Invisalign?

The adjustment trays for Invisalign are made to the specifications of the patient’s mouth so they will fit securely and not rub or damage the soft tissues of the mouth. The trays need to be worn for 20 - 22 hours a day in order to be effective. Patients will only remove their clear aligner trays while eating, drinking, and brushing their teeth. Patients will begin to notice changes over the coming weeks in their teeth alignment and with their bite motion. The symptoms will be alleviated and impact only the teeth which need treatment. With the way the alignment trays are designed, they only put pressure on teeth in need of treatment.

Each individual treatment plan will differ between patients. The length of time in which the alignment trays will need to be worn will be different. The complexity of the necessary treatment will dictate the length of time necessary in order to exact the change needed. In some cases, patients only need to wear the Invisalign treatment trays for a few months while in other cases it might be over a year.

Oral Hygiene with Invisalign

Unlike traditional braces which use wires and brackets to move teeth to their appropriate positions and cause a great deal of discomfort and even pain, Invisalign uses constant, gentle pressure provided by the treatment trays. A big difference between braces and Invisalign is that braces are permanent and cannot be removed for any reason until the treatment is complete. Invisalign can be removed for brushing and flossing and does not put undue pressure on teeth which can cause them to chip or fracture. Made of flexible material, they are comfortable.

While you are undergoing the Invisalign treatment, you will brush and floss your teeth twice daily, as per your normal oral hygiene routine. When removing the clear aligner, simply rinse it off with cool water. Do not use hot water as this can cause the aligner to warp and not fit properly to align your teeth. You can gently brush your aligner with toothpaste if you prefer, between meals, or when you go to bed. Be sure to use a soft bristled toothbrush that is not too harsh on your gums or the Invisalign.

Invisalign is the Clear Choice

Most people think of a mouthful of metal when they think of braces, however, those times have changed for the better. Now patients can wear clear trays that go unnoticed by others around them.
