Why Do I Need Braces or Invisalign® As An Adult?

Some adults choose to get braces for cosmetic reasons. They are not happy with their smiles, and they want to be more confident. There are other reasons adults need to get braces. Adults, as they age, might find that their bite has become a problem. It may be that their bite is incorrect, and that may be causing excessive wear. It might also be causing them pain. If an adult's bite is not correct, adults could continue to suffer from pain, especially if their bite is affecting their jaw.

In some cases, adults might have problems with tooth spacing that requires them to get braces. Overcrowded or poorly spaced teeth can lead to bite problems, speech problems, cracked teeth, and excessive wear. Large gaps between teeth can also cause problems for the jaw and lead to bone loss. Adults also get braces as a way to correct the bite and position the teeth so they can get other needed dental procedures such as implants and crowns. Many adult patients who need dental implants will benefit from having orthodontics before implants are placed so they can get the best result possible. The mouths of adults might have to have spaces between teeth or bites corrected to do implants. Adults might also need braces before prosthetic work or placement of crowns and bridges as well.

Did you know that once a dental implant is placed it can be more difficult or in some cases impossible to align your teeth ideally with braces or Invisalign®. If you are getting dental crowns or bridges placed aligning your teeth before placing the crown can significantly improve the esthetic outcome. If you are considering getting cosmetic dental crowns or veneers look into orthodontics first, aligning bleaching and reshaping your teeth can make a big difference! Additionally orthodontic results last forever and make your teeth healthier while dental crowns and veneers need replacement and create new areas where cavities can form.

What Kind of Braces Do Adults Need?

Luckily, adults have several different options for braces. They can opt for traditional metal braces, which are a good option for severe bite issues or severe overcrowding. Metal brackets are placed on the teeth, and wires are used in between the brackets. Your Orthodontist will develop a treatment plan for braces in which your teeth are gradually moved when the wires are tightened. However, many adults want an option that is less visible.

Many adults choose ceramic braces as a more aesthetic option compared to metal braces. Don’t worry, ceramic braces work the same way as metal braces. While the metal wires remain the same, the brackets are ceramic, which makes them less visible. During the development of ceramic brackets, they were bulky, broke frequently, and stained, taking away from their appeal and making them less aesthetically pleasing. At Senestraro Family Orthodontics we use 3M Clarity brackets and they are beautiful and functional, they are small and comfortable in the mouth, rarely break, and do not pick up any stain. We often have patients get compliments on how good their clear brackets look, many patients even put bright colors on their clear brackets....hot pink really pops on a Clarity bracket!

In some cases, adults can also use removable braces, called Invisalign®. These braces are made of plastic. They can be taken in and out to eat, drink, and brush or floss your teeth. Just like braces, we would come up with a plan to make sure to get each of your teeth aligned, and spaces or bites corrected.
