Traditional Braces Still Exist
Traditional braces are still being used but it is important to note they are not the only option and even if choosing conventional braces, there are so many options available. While most people still think of a mouthful of metal when they picture braces, the orthodontic field is being taken by storm with the advent of invisible alignment tray treatments. For patients concerned about appearance while getting their treatments, there are multiple non-conspicuous options available.
Lingual Braces
While lingual braces use the same concepts as traditional braces and even the same method in which to move teeth, the brackets and wires are attached to the backside of the teeth rather than the front. They are not an option for those patients with extreme orthodontic issues such as a bad overbite, but they are still something to consider. They also have more problems with brackets coming unfastened from teeth. Lingual braces are a great solution for those patients with simple to intermediate orthodontic issues.
Lingual Braces Associated Cost
Lingual braces are a bit more expensive than conventional style braces. This is because the placement of lingual braces is a bit more involved and the delicate nature of applying them to the back of teeth is more complicated. There can be some customization of the lingual braces brackets to make them fit appropriately on the patient’s teeth.
After Placement Considerations
Unfortunately, there are side effects with lingual braces. One such side effect to consider is the impact on speech. With traditional braces, there can be some impact, but they are a very small percentage of cases, however with lingual braces that number is higher. Due to them being on the tongue side of the teeth, they can rub against the tongue and make it more difficult to correctly enunciate. While this can happen, patients typically adapt to them and the issue fades over time.
