How Do Aligners Work?
Aligners are a great option for many of our patients who are seeking to correct an alignment issue. Facts about clear aligners include:

Metal Free: Aligners are made with a silicone material. They are designed to fit entirely over your teeth, helping them be nearly invisible. You will not get poked, scratched, or scraped by metal brackets because there are none.

Pressure: Invisalign™ and other clear aligner options provide a different treatment style while still using the same objective of using pressure to move teeth. Instead of having a wire tightened, the clear aligner system includes a series of aligners. Each aligner is worn progressively to allow for small movements.

Correct Many Malocclusions: There are some malocclusions, or bite issues, that require the specialized care that comes with traditional braces. Metal braces still allow for the greatest direct movement. But, for many, small corrections can be completed by simply wearing an aligner device. Aligners can be useful in closing gaps, helping with overbites, underbites, crossbites, and more.

Removable: To be most effective, you will need to wear your aligner a majority of the time, up to 22 hours a day. You will sleep with your aligner in place, and wear it throughout most of your day. Even though you will be wearing it a lot, it is still removable when needed. You can remove your aligner: when you eat - meaning you are not restricted in what you eat; when playing sports or engaging in physical activities where you might use a sportsguard; when playing wind or brass instruments; if you just want to look extra special for an occasion.

Faster Treatment: Your teeth move because pressure is being applied. This pressure can come from wire tightenings, or from switching to the next aligner in the series. In general, you may find that treatment goes a bit faster because you are able to move to the next aligner at a predetermined time, not when you are able to get into an orthodontic appointment. In general, studies have shown aligners to provide a faster treatment time than traditional braces.

Discreet: Our patients love the discretion that clear aligners provide. This includes both our teen and adult patients. You do not have to bear the look of brackets and wires in your mouth. You can maintain a professional appearance while we improve the look of your smile. Clear aligners are made of a silicone material that should be nearly invisible in your mouth. You don’t have to worry about them becoming stained or broken because you will wear each aligner in the series for about two weeks and then move on to the next one. They will always be clean and fresh looking. |
