Orthodontic Braces Portland, OR
Unfortunately, very few people are born with a perfect smile. At some point in their lives, most people will need to undergo some form of orthodontic treatment. At Senestraro Family Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on treating every member of the family, from young children to grandma or grandpa. While childhood is the ideal time to move teeth, more adults than ever before are opting for orthodontic treatment. Here is what you need to know about braces.
Do you have crooked or misaligned teeth? Braces are orthodontic devices that are used by many individuals. They are used to align teeth so that patients don’t have to deal with underbites, crossbites, or overbites any more. People with overcrowded, misplaced, or uneven teeth have found braces to be a long-term solution.
Since teeth are able to move if gaps are present, braces create pressure to reshape the teeth gradually over time. The jawbone is essentially encouraged to move so that teeth look more aesthetically pleasing. At Senestraro Family Orthodontics, our doctors, Dr. Seth Senestraro and Dr. Seth, can guide you on braces and dental hygiene so that you have the teeth and smile you have always dreamed of getting.

Why Damon Braces
Damon braces look the same as traditional metal braces and lingual braces orthodontic treatments for teeth straightening and alignment, however, they are slightly different self-ligating systems and are less involved. Ideally, Damon braces are utilized and placed by an orthodontist on the patients to correct unevenly spaced teeth, poorly oriented teeth, crowded teeth, and crooked teeth. While lingual braces and traditional metal braces brackets require several accessories and adjustments, Damon braces are self-ligating, require fewer visits, and are more comfortable.
Types of Braces
Depending on the problem in the mouth, there are different types of braces. Usually, braces are made of metal or ceramic brackets. These brackets usually are glued to the front of the teeth. Then wires are placed through or on top of the brackets. The wires are tightened according to the plan of the orthodontist. This is the typical type of braces, and they can be used for both children and adults.
For a more subtle looking option, we also offer a type of clear braces known as 3M Clarity. These braces use clear ceramic brackets with a self-ligating design feature provide the patient with the care they need without the obvious appearance of metal braces. These differ from clear aligners, which use nearly invisible, removable trays.
Another type of braces, which is an innovation, uses clips on the brackets instead of bands for wires. In the past, rubber bands were used instead of brackets and clips. However, some people were allergic to the rubber bands. Also, the bands broke more easily than wire bands. These band-free braces were used to solve these problems.
Protecting Your Braces
Once patients start treatment, it's very important to protect their braces. They need to be sure they are brushing and flossing regularly. They also have to avoid sticky foods. Hard, crunchy foods such as popcorn also have to be avoided. Also, people who have braces must go in to see their orthodontist to have their braces checked and tightened every other month.
