Aligners vs Braces
Portland, OR

A girl holding a clear aligner smiling at Senestraro Family Orthodontics in Portland, ORWhile the majority of orthodontic care still occurs in children, the explosion of adult orthodontics is showing no signs of slowing down. The stigma attached to braces is going away and more adults are choosing to do something about their misaligned teeth or jaw.

Orthodontics is the study of proper tooth alignment and jaw functionality. When the patient’s jaw or teeth are out of alignment, not only do they not look symmetrical, but they can indeed cause pain and discomfort along the jaw and in the mouth. Teeth can wear down much quicker when they are not in proper alignment and pain can occur at the TMJ because of improper jaw alignment. If you have suffered from any of these situations, please reach out to us today to discuss your orthodontic treatment options. We are located at Senestraro Family Orthodontics.

What is the Big Deal?

Most orthodontics are revolving around outward appearances but that is not the only focus nor is it the only benefit. Certainly, some adults might consider getting braces, which focus on the appearance of the smile and how they are perceived by others. It is important to note that while yes, the smile is improved with proper teeth alignment they are easier to brush and floss and help to diminish the chances of food collecting in those hard-to-reach areas. By doing this, bacteria have less of an opportunity to build up and damage teeth or soft tissues which can lead to periodontal disease. This is important because, in the latter stages, periodontal disease can lead to stroke or even heart disease.

Types of Treatment Available

Most treatment regimens last between 18 to 22 months. Obviously, the severity of the issues and how the patient’s own mouth responds to braces will dictate how quickly or slowly the teeth will be moved to their new placements.

There are different types of braces available, each one using the same gentle pressure to move the teeth to their appropriate spots. Traditional braces are the type everyone thinks of when referring to braces. These use brackets that are glued to the front of the teeth and an arch wire attached to each one. Aligners are the new up and coming braces which are removable plastic trays which shift teeth to their new positions. Self-ligating braces utilize a wire which is slipped through a clip attached to the bracket. Lingual braces use the same concept as traditional braces except they are attached to the back of the teeth.

It is important to note that while the success of the treatment involves the patient’s willingness to follow directions and invest in it, adults have a much higher success rate than do children. This is particularly true of the alignment tray type of orthodontic treatment.
